Another great series of data graphics sets for watching by Toby Ng Design in a series entitled “If the world were a village of 100 people”. “If the world were a village of 100 people, how would the composition be? This set of 20 posters is built on statistics about the spread of population around the world under various classifications. The numbers are turned into graphics to give another sense a touch – Look, this is the world we are living in. Designer Toby Ng graduated from Central St.Martins, London in 2008. Ng overwhelms people with his innovative designs that turn disorder into delight. His designs outstand the crowd with a genuine combination of creativity, experience and a sense of humour.”

This simple chart shows the process of studying foreign languages. It explains which languages are too difficult to master, how much time it requires to finish the studies and how many native speakers are in the world.

It is common sense that many Romance languages are gauged as “easy,” based on their similarity to English, but I was surprised that Russian is only “medium.” Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean comprise the list of “hard” languages to learn for native English speakers.

One of the more common arguments against our capability to build an AI (or reach the singularity) is built upon the premise that we are still very far from understanding fully the capabilities of our own human brain. Thus, the argument goes, we are unlikely to simulate let alone re-create successfully any artificial one, be it in a virtual or silicon based environment.

I just found out this interesting graph called Superhuman: The Incredible Savant Brain that makes me pause…

China is huge and growing at breakneck speed. With 1.3 billion people, China’s population is four times the size of U.S.

China is trying hard to be more than just the world’s factory. It is looking to be an innovator. Earlier this year, China has introduced a patent development strategy that ambitiously aims to have 2 million patent applications by 2015. We are also witnessing a growing list of Western technology companies partnering with Chinese companies.

Nokia, Google and Groupon are some recent active companies while Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg had taken time to visit China last year. To fuel innovation, Chinese Internet giant, Tencent has also recently set up a $760 million fund to invest in local start-ups. Dell forecasted that it would invest $250 billion in China over the next ten years. All these, I believe, are snippets of hint towards an innovative China in the near future.

In 2009, China produced over 67 million LCD TVs and 619 million mobile phones. The infographic below tells the tale of China in statistics and helps you to understand the country better.
